Network Monitor ICMP Retries

Nicolas Uhlmann

If a host is monitored by ICMP, the status is set to down immediately as soon as three pings fail. To reduce false-negative notifications, there should be an option in the configuration of each network monitor task to set a number of retries before the status of this task is set to down.

Example 1: A host gets pinged every 30 seconds. The ping fails during a period. At the next periodical ping (after 30 seconds) the host is reachable again and the status of the task stays up.

Example 2: A host gets pinged every 30 seconds. The ping fails during a period. The next two periodical pings fail, too. The status of the task is set to down and a notification is triggered.

We also had an issue about false negatives. SMSs were sent for all our monitored nodes repeatedly. Maybe network performance was a bit sluggish at that time.
